An important figure in the St George story: the club’s first tryscorer in the first-grade premiership and the first St George junior to play for Australia. ‘Bluey’ Carstairs was on the wing for St George’s premiership debut and scored the only try in a 4–3 loss to Glebe. He toured with the 1921–22 Kangaroos, appearing in two Tests, and then toured New Zealand with NSW in 1922. In 1925, he kicked what might have been the greatest goal in the club’s history: a last-minute penalty against Norths from his own side of halfway that gave Saints a draw. Carstairs played in the 1927 premiership final before leaving to coach at Narrabri in 1929.
