Scored a try in his initial first-grade appearance in July 1953, and a year later scored five tries as St George fought back from 23–6 down to beat Norths 34–28. Played for NSW earlier in 1954 against Queensland and Great Britain, missed the World Cup because of a broken wrist, and then had his best season; some critics rated him as the best centre in Sydney football. But injuries hampered him, and then he dislocated his shoulder early in the grand final and had to leave the field
