St George’s hooker from 1938 to 1943, was the son of the club’s inaugural captain-coach, the incomparable Herb Gilbert, and brother of Jack and Bob Gilbert, who both played first grade for the Saints. In 1941, he and Jack were members of St George’s first premiership winning team. Came into the Saints first-grade side when Test hooker Percy Fairall moved to Souths after the 1937–38 Kangaroo tour and he made an immediate impact. Would surely have played Test football but for the War, he was away with the army in 1944–45 and then joined Balmain
