Played one first-grade game as a 19-year-old in St George’s premiership year of 1949 and was a stalwart of the Saints team that won the first of the club’s famous 11 consecutive premierships. Short for a forward, but wide-shouldered, in 1951 he formed an unlikely and uneven second-row partnership with a tall, powerful 18-year-old named Norm Provan. Played in Brisbane in 1953 and at Scone a year later, but then returned to Kogarah and didn’t miss a game as a prop or second rower in 1955. Named captain of the reserves at the start of the following season, he fought his way back into the top side, where he stayed all the way to the grand final, his greatest day in football. His death at age 35 was a tremendous shock.
