Became a first-grade regular in 1939, as a centre, and was one of the best three-quarters in the competition in 1940 and 1941, when he played for City Firsts and NSW. Standing just 5ft 5in (165cm), Hart enlisted in August 1941 and missed St George’s 32–8 semi-final victory over Balmain, but was magnificent in the final, when Saints won 31–14. He served as a commando and survived the war, but never played first-grade again
