Scored the winning try in St George’s first game at Hurstville, in 1921, and was Saints’ best forward throughout their debut season. Tye became club captain in 1922, a year in which he toured New Zealand with the NSW side. He announced his retirement at the end of the 1926 season, but was talked him into one more year, which meant the 34-year-old warhorse was able to play in St George’s first premiership final
