A Port Kembla junior, became the first Australian player to be chosen from the Illawarra region when selected at age 19 for the 1937–38 Kangaroo tour. Hazelton joined St George in 1939 and thrilled Saints fans from day one but after enlisting was not available from 1941 to 1945 and then returned to Port Kembla. He averaged better than a try a game in two dynamic seasons with St George
