Came to Sydney in 1941 to enlist in the AIF, but when initially rejected he joined St George and impressed from round 1. By June, he was in the City Seconds and then was picked for NSW. Scored two tries in the semi-final against Balmain and was one of the best players on the field in the final until he sent off when Saints were leading 22–6 and the club’s first premiership was assured. He never played premiership football for St George again. After serving in the war, he returned to Brisbane, to become a major figure at Southern Suburbs, make his Test debut in 1948, be named vice-captain of the 1948–49 Kangaroos and lead Australia in three Tests.
