Initially a reluctant Saint, as he was forced to play for the club in 1921 because he was residentially qualified (he preferred to stay at Newtown, where he had been appointed captain). But ‘Ricketty’ Johnston is significant figure in the St George story: the first man to play for NSW and Australia while a member of the club. He played five games in Saints’ first season and was picked for 1921–22 Kangaroo tour, and later coached St George (1933–35) and served as a lower-grade coach, selector and committeeman

Played a total of 9 games for St George
